| bengaluru heavy rainfall |
Bengaluru is currently grappling with severe waterlogging and flooding due to heavy rainfall. On May 18, 2025, the city received approximately 10.5 cm (4.1 inches) of rain within 24 hours, even before the official monsoon season had commenced. This unexpected downpour overwhelmed the city's drainage infrastructure, leading to widespread disruptions.
Key Impacts:
-
Severe Waterlogging: Areas like Sai Layout, Yelahanka, and parts of North Bengaluru experienced knee-deep water, submerging streets and homes. In Yelahanka, residents had to rely on tractors for evacuation, and boats were deployed to rescue stranded individuals.
-
Infrastructure Strain: The city's drainage system, already under pressure, failed to cope with the sudden influx of water. This resulted in flooded roads, uprooted trees, and significant traffic congestion. Notably, a BJP MLA used a JCB vehicle to navigate the flooded streets of Sai Layout.
Casualties and Damage: A tragic incident occurred when a 3-year-old girl was killed after a tree fell on her during the heavy rains. Additionally, over 100 homes in Sai Layout were inundated, and several vehicles were damaged due to the flooding.
